Everything That Didn’t Fit (That's What She Said)

In our penultimate article before hitting the Games Of The Year, everything that didn’t quite fit anywhere else has been squished into one single thread of incredible. Whether it be because we didn’t have enough games in a particular genre to break out into it’s own category or the thing itself simply doesn’t fit genre conventions at all - but it definitely still deserves your attention - it has landed here. Many wonderful experiences abound!

Buck Up And Drive!

Just look at that screenshot. I mean, come on. An arcade racer where you simply steer to avoid traffic, this racing game is instead focused on doing flips in the air, grinding along side rails and continuously hitting those boost pads. Bloody excellent arcade racing fun.

Cartomancy Anthology

A collection of 22 small games all based on different tarot cards and fortune telling. It’s like those “X games in one CD!” disks you used to get, but instead of being mostly knockoff board games, you get a cohesive collection of fun little experiences ranging from a few minutes long to an hour plus.

Occupy White Walls

Free

When you realize the raw potential of what an art museum could actually mean in a digital space, your mind can get lost in the possibilities. Luckily this game gives it’s players room to a) create their own digital space, building out a museum of whatever they want it to be and share with the world, and b) a space to go and discover what wonderful slices of digital space others have carved out for themselves.

Outcore: Desktop Adventure

Free, supporter pack available

A wildly inventive game that honestly surprised me in its use of your actual computer. This game takes the meta aspects of other games like DDLC, Undertale and more to the extreme. And it’s free!

SenS

Early Access

An avant-garde, mysterious project from the mind behind NaissanceE. It feels like a follow up, but also something… else. It’s got more to build out, but if you like different, then this is for you.

Hardspace Shipbreaker

Late stage capitalism, in space! Carve up ships using your various space tools, performing hard physical labour while you participate in a story about corporations, unions and what it means to live to work.

UNDETECTED

Has demo

Indie Metal Gear Solid in all the best ways. A stealth game about sneaking in and getting what you came for.

Flat Eye

A resource management sim focused on narrative. Manage a futuristic gas station while experiencing a dystopian story from the makers of Night Call.

A Musical Story

You can check out my thoughts on this really cool game here, but in short, a really interesting rhythm game that suits both beginners and experts of the genre, with a compelling story to tell - told without any words - to top it all off.

Indiepocalypse

The Indiepocalypse anthologies are excellent monthly collections of often fascinating games wrapped up in a digital package. I so desperately want time to write more about this now 3 years strong project. Go pick up literally any of them, download it immediately and check out what cool experiences are in store for you!
